INNOVATIVE learning environmentS?

CO-CREATE innovative student-centered learning spaces
that will engage and empower

Learning environments

Autens co-creates and develops innovative, inspiring, and inclusive learning environments in collaboration with schools and educational institutions.

We challenge the traditional classroom setup and create spaces tailored to how children and young people actually learn, what motivates them, and how they develop skills and competencies for the future in a nurturing environment with wellbeing at the very heart.

Our approach and solutions are based in research, grown on the basis of local DNA and stakeholders, and inspired by the emerging future.

Learning environments shape behaviors and practices. Intentional and insightful learning space design can be a powerful lever for school development and play a key role in shaping the student experience.

Think about which role your spaces play in relation to inclusion and diversity, student agency, varied didactic approaches, relationships and wellbeing. If you look at your spaces as a shared didactic and pedagogical toolbox, do you have what you need to support every student in growing, learning and taking part?

Over the years we have found that the most succesful spaces are those co-created by teachers and students. We have developed our unique Learning Space Design Lab™ method exactly for this purpose.

This prototyping tool invites everyone to the table to develop physical representations of the educational DNA and desired learning culture. It challenges the perspective on what is possible and what is needed, while also strengthening organisational cohesion and culture. The method is grounded in research on how we might collectively imagine meaningful futures and dream beyond our immediate comfort zones, enabling us to make the necessary leaps together to build schools of tomorrow.

Changing the design of learning spaces aims to facilitate a new era of innovative pedagogies where students have support, choice and agency.

WE AIM TO...

NEW LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS IN OLD SCHOOLS?

Most schools were created in a time where education was mostly ‘sit and get’ with the teacher in front. Today we strive to create collaborative inspiring environments where students can explore, create, collarate, discuss, work on projects and exhibit their work while having agency. How do we best support new learning cultures in our many existing school buildings to serve students of today for their lives tomorrow?

A standout example of our work is with Høsterkøb Skole, a charming village school located north of Copenhagen, Denmark. Faced with space constraints for their classes, they reached out to partner with us. Our approach began with a deep dive into the space they already possessed, guided by their mission, vision, and core values. We engaged with their dedicated teaching staff in a day-long workshop to reimagine their learning environments. Our goal was to support innovative and varied models of teaching including project-based learning as well as a student-centered environment catering to the very diverse needs of their student community – and not least find the necessary space for a much richer learning environment which they didn’t think they had. The budget was almost non-existent.

We captured the transformation in a short video. Take a moment to watch it and note the potential for change that is right in front of almost any school!
